The Immutable Word of God (Source: Johnny O. Trail) June 27, 2010

The word Immutable is defined by the American Heritage Dictionary as “not subject or susceptible to change.” As students of God’s Holy Writ, we must determine how we will react to the commandments contained therein. Hopefully, we have resolved to let the Word modify our lives so that we can fit Yahweh’s divine pattern for godly, moral living.
Even so, there are individuals who claim that the Bible has no application to people in the twenty-first century. They claim that the Bible was written to an ancient audience in the Middle East, and it has very little bearing on the direction of modern America or the world as a whole.
Contrary to what some might say, the word of God is applicable to all ages and to all people. In Ephesians 3.21 Paul tells the Ephesian brethren “Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” God’s love, which is revealed in Christ, will be applicable throughout all ages. If the word is a revelation of that love, then the word of God must be just as relevant as God’s love.
When Christ gave the great commission in Matthew 28, he closed out by saying in verse twenty, “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” In saying this, Christ wanted people who were baptized to be taught the word of God, and by implication, he wanted converts to be taught as long as the world stood.
Thus, the word of God is applicable to people in our day and age. One magnificent aspect of the Bible is its ability to speak to people in all ages. It is able to address all of our questions concerning morality and godliness.
When people claim that the Bible is irrelevant or unimportant, they are simply trying to justify themselves against scriptures that condemn their behavior. The desire to dissect God’s word so that one can justify himself is nothing new.
In fact, one Old Testament character, Jehoiakim, cut the word of God into pieces and cast it into a fire (Jeremiah 36.22-23). In destroying the word of God, he displayed contempt for God’s revelation. He also demonstrated that in his mind the word of God has no relevance for his life.
The word of God is relevant in making all of life’s decisions. Consider II Timothy 3.16 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” Thus, one can argue that the word of God is all sufficient for instructing mankind.
In the word of God, we have the mind of Christ revealed to us. I Corinthians 2.16 “For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ, we have knowledge of God.”
Furthermore, people in all ages desire salvation. As long as men desire eternal life, the word of God will be relevant. I Corinthians 2.10 “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God.”
Never make the mistake of disregarding God’s instruction. It is just a relevant today as it was some 2000 year ago. Make the source and guide for your life as a Christian the Bible.
