“The End” Source: Andy Warren December 28, 2008
“The End” sounds so final! We have read stories and seen movies, which have said, “The End,” but we know there’s more to it! “They lived happily ever after” just doesn’t tell it all! It doesn’t tell us of their problems and successes later in life or their deaths.
However, there has been an end to so many things already.
Archaeologists and paleontologists have dug up bones of many creatures that are now extinct, that is, they’ve come to an end. Sometimes we see the remains in museums, sometimes only photographs are available.
When someone comes to the end of their journey, those of us left behind miss them; we long to have the stay; we don’t want them to go.
“The End” in the Bible refers to an end to this world, to this universe and to time itself. Peter said it like this: “But the end of all things is at hand” 1 Peter 4:7
What is not specifically addressed in that passage is what will BEGIN! It is not the end of our souls; they will continue! After “the end of all things” is the beginning of eternity! It is the beginning of heaven or the beginning of hell!
That’s why Peter talked about how we should live, since it is “the end of all things.” It is not simply a matter of taking advantage of the time we have! Too many use that thought to do whatever they want to do to enjoy selfish pleasure. Peter described “the end of all things” as motivation to please God! See in verse 11, “that in all things God may be glorified!”
So I ask a legitimate question, if today were the end of all things, what would you be motivated to do? Oh, I know, there could be all sorts of answers, but Peter’s answer is unique:
1 Peter 4:7-10 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
