God’s Creation Source: Jonathan Pettus July 5, 2009
One of the greatest blessings we have as Christians is that we are privileged to serve a truly awesome God! In Psalm 19, David writes that the Lord’s power has been clearly proclaimed in the world around us. Verses 1-6 speak of God’s majesty in creation:
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.” (19:1-2)
We can certainly see the wonder of God’s creation with the beauty of the changing leaves. Nature’s wonder doesn’t just proclaim the Creator - it screams it! Everywhere you go and everything you see serves as a reminder that the Designer, our Heavenly Father, reigns!
In verses 6-11, David writes about the perfect law of the Lord. He uses words like perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, and true to describe God’s commandments. We sometimes don’t value the direction He has set for us, but the law of the Lord is the ultimate plan for our lives. It’s the perfect plan. Living a life that follows these commandments is to be desired more than the finest earthly things, and when they are kept “there is great reward” (19:11).
The perfection of creation and the perfection of God’s law leads David to consider his imperfection in verses 12-13. He speaks of his sins, both private and public, and begs to “be blameless, and innocent of great transgression” (19:13). We can all put ourselves in the Psalmist’s place and learn from the humbleness he displays and repentance he requests.
The last verse of this Psalm paints a picture of the life that each of us should strive to live:
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.”
We can have no greater goal in life than to live a life pleasing to God. Will the thoughts we have, words we say, and the things we do always be acceptable in God’s eyes? Not always. However, when we look at the perfection in God’s creation and in His law, we are reminded of how awesome of a God we serve! Let that motivate us to worship more sincerely, study more earnestly, pray more fervently, serve more selflessly, and love more abundantly.
May we always be thankful we serve such an awesome God!
